Call to Artists: 2017 Festifall Commemorative Poster Contest
The Town of Chapel Hill’s Parks & Recreation Department invites artists to submit an application to the 2017 Festifall Commemorative Poster Contest. From the applicants,three selected artists will submit a 11 x 17 tall design proposal. One of these designs will be selected as the 2017 Festifall Commemorative Poster design, and the selected artist will receive a $500 honorarium to finalize a digital design that will be printed on commemorative posters and t-shirts to be sold at Festifall on October 1, 2017.
ELIGIBILITY: Open to all North Carolina artists aged 16 and older working in two-dimensional media who can submit a design as a specified print-ready digital file.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION SUBMISSION: May 15th, 2017
North Carolina artists aged 16 and older working in two-dimensional media are invited to submit applications to design a 11x17 Commemorative Poster for the Town of Chapel Hill’s Festifall event. Three artists will be selected by a jury to submit an original and creative poster design that celebrates Festifall by focusing on the event’s location, season, experience, patrons and/or artworks on display. The ideal poster would embody the look and feel of the arts festival. The jury will then select the winning poster design and the selected artist will receive $500 to submit the final design as a digital file per specifications to be reproduced as the commemorative poster available for sale as a merchandise item at Festifall on October 1, 2017.
The winning design will remain the property of the artist and the artist will be credited when the design is used. However, the Town of Chapel Hill will retain the rights to reproduce the design for Festival purposes both this year and in the future. The Town may ask for reasonable changes to the design to accommodate the needs of the event. The Town may elect to use the winning design in other festival materials, including but not limited to t-shirts, program guides, banners, etc.
How to Apply
Artists and artist teams may upload application materials as digital files through our web form or send through the postal mail a CD or DVD containing digital application materials to the Cultural Arts Division (addresses provided below). No hardcopy portfolios will be considered or returned. A complete application will include the following files:
Five (5) Images of Previous Two-Dimensional Artworks
Each applicant should submit images of five original artworks previously created by the applicant so that the jury may consider the applicant’s artistic style, media and suitability for the poster design. Work should not be presented as a montage of images (i.e., in a PowerPoint file); each image must be a separate JPEG file.
One-Paragraph Description of Design Concept
A text file (.doc or .docx) describing in five sentences or less the look, content and imagery proposed for the poster design.
One “Sketch” Image of Design Concept
A quick and basic layout or sketch showing the main pictorial elements of the poster design concept. The five images of previous work mentioned above will demonstrate the applicant’s artistic talent; this sketch is intended to show general concept and layout only. This image must be a PC-compatible JPEG file at 72 pixels per inch, as close to but no larger than either of the following dimensions: 900 pixels wide by 650 pixels tall. This JPEG file must be named in the following format – “lastname_sketch.jpg” – where the artist’s last name is followed by an underscore, “sketch” and the file extension.

A jury comprising arts professionals, representatives of the Cultural Arts Division, downtown businesses and the Chapel Hill Cultural Arts Commission will review all complete applications to select three artists to invite to submit poster design proposals. Selections will be based on the aesthetic quality of the artists’ previous work as submitted in the application, the suitability of the artists’ style, skills and experience for the commemorative poster project, and the design concept presented in description, sketch and/or proposal.
In mid-May 2017 Cultural Arts staff will notify applicants of the jury results and will make arrangements with selected artists. The selected artist will receive paperwork to complete and instructions for proposal submission.

Poster goes to print. Upon acceptance of design file by printer $500 honorarium check issued.
October 1, 2017
Commemorative posters and t-shirts on display and for sale at Festifall.
The Town of Chapel Hill reserves the right to refuse any or all submissions, substituted artwork, and any finalist(s); to waive informalities in proposals or procedures; to withhold the award of the honorarium should it be determined that submissions are not adequate; or for any other reason prior to a written contractual arrangement being reached.
